Why support the Legacy of Justice Foundation?

The Legacy of Justice Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization established to support and preserve the civil justice system in Kansas through education programs, publications, and research. The Legacy of Justice Foundation is supported by voluntary contributions.

The Legacy of Justice Foundation (LOJF) began in 1981 as a dream of providing a forum for learning, educating the public, and amplifying the voices of trial lawyers to preserve the civil justice system in Kansas. More than 40 years later, the LOJF continues to make a difference in the lives of Kansans impacted by the civil justice system and the trial lawyers who represent them.

What does the future hold?

The Legacy of Justice Foundation board wants to expand its work to focus on:

  • Public education and research on the courts

  • Law school scholarships, stipends, and awards for future litigators
  • Fellowships for research supporting the civil justice system and fair courts

  • Supporting the work of like-minded organizations to protect fair courts, provide access to legal services, and provide consumer-focused information

Leading Legacy

The LOJF exists to preserve and enhance the trial bar and the civil justice system in order to protect the rights of Kansans. It develops and distributes resources to support its mission in numerous ways including educational efforts to continually raise the standard of client representation by trial attorneys, protect and promote the independence of the judiciary, and enhance understanding of the 7th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The LOJF was originally incorporated in 1981 under the name Kansas Trial Lawyers Association Education Fund, Inc.  Its original purpose was to mount continuing legal education programs for members of the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association (KTLA) and other lawyers interested in plaintiff’s law.  In addition, the group’s mission included advancing the science of jurisprudence by stimulating research in trial advocacy and publishing a scholarly journal. In 2000 the Board of Directors changed the name of the organization to the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association Foundation; and in 2002 the name was changed again to the Legacy of Justice Foundation.
